MEET: India Burns of North Carolina Central University
By Tia Newman, North Carolina Central University

India Burns hails from Petersburg, Virginia and she is bringing her fire to North Carolina Central. As a college senior, with a double major in accounting and entrepreneurship, India decided to share her love for beauty and  crafted what every girl on campus knows as “Beauty by Indi”.  Beauty by Indi is the on campus go-to for flawless makeup, hot hair styles, and just a little girl talk. In addition to being a superb student and a businesswoman she also serves as a campus leader. She is the 2015-2016 academic year Miss 100 Black Women and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council. Check out what India had to say when we asked her how she thrives on her campus as a beauty influencer.

Tell us what your mission is with Beauty By Indi.
The only thing you will get correct in life is being yourself.  What I really want to do is to create a safe environment for women to tap into their inner beauty and be free to be themselves. I want to help them express who they are and enhance their beauty and confidence at the same time. We [Women] are so worried about what society thinks or who we can impress instead of how we can make ourselves happy.  After they get a service with me, I intend to boost that confidence!

What interested you in beauty?
I would have to say the ability to add or bring about confidence in other women. To me, beauty isn’t all about what’s outside, but how you look at yourself from the inside. I actually learned how to braid in a foster home. While in foster care we learned not to be too conscience of our looks because we didn’t want to attract the wrong eye. I had to find a balance. I was constantly trying to hide who I was until I realized beauty comes from within. I want to instill that confidence in others.

How do you balance Beauty By Indi with everything else?
Honestly, I’ve learned to sleep more and discipline myself. I don’t stay on the scene or go to every party. As a result, I learned less is more. Even though I work three jobs I schedule appointments around my availability to stay in control of everything that’s going on. I don’t like to do anything half way.  However, independent women have also raised me. My mom holds many hats and all I know how to do is balance and work everything out.  Most importantly, while I’m on my spiritual path, I’ve learned not to worry and trust God and my intuition.

What are your favorite products?

MAC Cosmetics lipstick in Sin ($17,

LORAC Travel- Size Tantalizer Baked Bronzer ($8,

My favorite products would have to be my MAC Sin lipstick – I love deep purple and burgundy against

my skin tone. Lorac, has the best bronzer for women of color when adding a highlight to their face and I always recommend NYX products to my clients. It’ s great quality and affordable.
